Abstract

We have performed a microscopic study of the 7Be(p,γ)8B reaction at low energies within the framework of the resonating group method. At solar energies, E=20 keV, we find an astrophysical S-factor of 0.0254 keV b which is in agreement with the value currently adopted in solar model calculations.

In an interesting application the model has been used to study the low-energy 7Be(p,γ)8Be reaction [8] which is crucial for understanding the high-energy neutrino spectrum from the sun. Extrapolation of measured cross sections for this reaction [9] are usually performed on the basis of microscopic 3-cluster models; examples of such studies are reported in [10–13]. Very recently a first attempt to adopt the no-core shell model [14] for the description of low-energy nuclear reactions has been reported [15].
