Abstract

Effects leading to differences Jnp in the mean field felt by neutrons and photons scattering from an N = Z nucleus are examined. The contribution of core polarization effects is shown to be significant (about 30% of the size of the usual Coulomb correction) and it reduces the overall discrepancy between theoretical estimates of Jnp and recent comparisons of the optical potentials obtained from neutron and proton scattering from 12C, 28Si, 32S and 40Ca.
