Abstract

An angular correlation measurement for the Al27(16O,α12C) reaction has been made at 65 MeV bombarding energy. The correlation was obtained by moving an α detector through an angular range of +109–+60° while the carbon detector was fixed at -30°. The angular correlation is compared to two previous experimental studies of the same reaction at 65 MeV, to a Monte Carlo calculation of the incomplete fusion reaction, and to an inelastic breakup calculation. The measured angular correlation peaks near the most forward measured angle (thetaα=11°). This suggests that an incomplete fusion process, which predicts a peak in the angular correlation at 41°, does not describe the α+12C coincidence production. The inelastic breakup calculations do a good job of predicting the peak positions in the 65, 77, and 87 MeV angular correlation data. The success of the inelastic breakup calculations supports the supposition that the α+12C production, in the 6587 MeV energy range, is dominated by the sequential breakup process.
