Abstract

Pion production in nuclear heavy collisions is calculated using the method of virtual quanta. The model makes predictions for exclusive cross sections, where the pion is produced in coincidence with a nucleus excited into an isobar analogue state. We improve our previous work by including recoil effects, properly taking in account the velocity change of the projectile, and extending the calculations to symmetric collisions. We find that the approximation to neglect recoil effects and the projectile velocity change, which is frequently used in the literature, can drastically overestimate the final results.
