Abstract

The internal quadrupole moment calculations for nuclei of odd mass isotopes of europium and samarium including pair correlations do not reproduce the experimentally observed abrupt change of the moments in the N=88−90 region. In contrast, when pairing is switched off, calculations reproduce quantitatively not only the abrupt change in this region but the observed behaviour of the quadrupole moments for N<90 isotopes as well. The isotopic behaviour of deformation in nuclei in the transition region (N=82−90) is shown to be determined essentially by the rearrangement of the average potential levels near the Fermi surface.
