Abstract

Total cross sections for π⁰ photoproduction on Be, C, Al, Cu, Sn and Pb have been measured in the photon energy range k = 220–450 MeV using the tagged photon beam of the Bonn 500 MeV synchrotron. The data show a broad maximum around k = 350 MeV. The A-dependence can be described by σ_A ∝ A^0.66. The results are compared to charged pion production and to total hadronic cross sections.

We calculate total photon-nucleus and electron-nucleus cross sections γA→X, eA→e^′X and several cross sections on pion and eta production in nuclei in the energy regime between the first and the third resonance region for photon virtualities $Q^{2} ⩽1.0 GeV^{2}$ within a semi-classical BUU transport model. In both cases we discuss the varying influence of several medium modifications on the cross sections for different values of Q².

We study the inclusive (e, e′ N), (e, e′ NN), (e, e′ π), (e, e′ πN) reactions in nuclei using a Monte Carlo simulation method to treat the multichannel problem of the final state. The input consists of reaction probabilities for the different steps evaluated using microscopical many body methods. We obtain a good agreement with experiment in some channels where there is data and make predictions for other channels which are presently under investigation in several electron laboratories. The comparison of the theoretical results with experiment for several kinematical conditions and diverse channels can serve to learn about different physical processes occurring in the reaction. The potential of this theoretical tool to make prospections for possible experiments, aiming at pinning down certain reaction probabilities, is also emphasized.

Extension of the intranuclear cascade model for photonuclear reactions at energies up to 10 Gev

The intranuclear cascade (INC) model for photonuclear reactions has been extended at energies up to 10 GeV. To this end a phenomenological method for exclusive description of the elementary γN-interaction has been developed taking into account both the resonance contribution from the two-body channels $γN → πB^{∗}$ and $γN → M^{∗} N$ ( $B^{∗}$ and $M^{∗}$ being baryon and meson resonances) and the non-resonant statistical contribution from multibody channels γN → iπN (2 ⩽ i ⩽ 8). This method well describes a wide range of γN data up to E_γ ∼ 10 GeV. The INC model takes into account rescattering and absorption in a nucleus of pions, nucleons, and η-, ϱ-, ω-mesons generated in the γN-interaction. The evaporation, fission and multifragmentation of highly excited residual nucleus have also been taken into account. As a result of the Monte Carlo simulation an event of γA-reaction is generated which contains mesons, nucleons, nuclear fragments, fission fragments and final nuclide. The model well describes the available data on meson production and proton emission obtained with quasi-monochromatic photons.
