Abstract

High-resolution spectroscopy of π+ from K absorption at rest has been used for the first time to identify Σ hypernuclear states. The observed spectrum from a (CH)n target has revealed a p32p12 doublet of BeΣ12 with narrow widths. The spin-orbit splitting of Σ is deduced to be 5 MeV, 0.8 times that for nucleons.
