Beyond the acceptance limit of DRAGON: The case of the 6Li(α,γ)10B reaction

Radiative capture reactions play a pivotal role for our understanding of the origin of the elements in the cosmos. Recoil separators provide an effective way to study these reactions, in inverse kinematics, and take advantage of the use of radioactive ion beams. However, a limiting factor in the study of radiative capture reactions in inverse kinematics is the momentum spread of the product nuclei, which can result in an angular spread larger than the geometric acceptance of the separator. The DRAGON facility at TRIUMF is a versatile recoil separator, designed to study radiative capture reactions relevant to astrophysics in the A $\sim$ 10–30 region. In this work we present the first attempt to study with DRAGON a reaction, $^{6}$ Li( $α, γ$ ) $^{10}$ B, for which the recoil angular spread exceeds DRAGON’s acceptance. Our result is in good agreement with the literature value, showing that DRAGON can measure resonance strengths of astrophysically important reactions even when not all the recoils enter the separator.
Calculation of the 6 Li(n,n ′ γ) 6 Li and 7 Li(n,n ′ γ) 7 Li cross sections up to 20 MeV neutron kinetic energy within a three-body approach

In this work we numerically calculate cross sections of the reactions ⁶Li $(n, n^{'} γ)$ ⁶Li and ⁷Li $(n, n^{'} γ)$ ⁷Li reactions in the region of neutron kinetic energy $E_{n} = 0.5 - 20$ MeV. Neutron-nucleus interaction is defined in terms of the three-body problem wherein the target-nucleus is a bound two-body system. Dynamics in all two-body segments is described by the coupled Lippman-Schwinger equations with separable potentials. Free parameters of these potentials are chosen based on a fairly good description of elastic scattering phase shifts and radiation cross sections: $t α \to γ^{7}$ Li, $d α \to γ^{6}$ Li, $n d \to γ t$ . The system of three-body strongly interacting particles is described by the Faddeev equations. Radiative relaxation of the excited nucleus is effectively taken into account by the electromagnetic vertex inserted in the three-body scattering amplitude. Total cross sections and also poorly measured double differential cross sections of ⁶Li $(n, n^{'} γ)$ ⁶Li and ⁷Li $(n, n^{'} γ)$ ⁷Li are obtained and briefly analyzed.
Inelastic scattering of fast neutrons on 6 Li and 7 Li nuclei in three-body cluster model

The systematic approach to calculating cross section of inelastic neutron scattering on ⁶Li and ⁷Li nuclei in the range of kinetic energies $E_{n} = 0.1 - 20$ MeV is presented. The reaction mechanism is described using the Faddeev equations within the problem of neutron interaction with two clusters which form the target nucleus bound state. The length $a_{n Li}$ of elastic n−Li scattering are calculated. The coherence effect on $n^{5}$ Li and αd contributions to ⁶Li nucleus ground state is demonstrated by the example of elastic neutron scattering reaction. Total and differential cross sections of inelastic neutron scattering on ⁶Li and ⁷Li nuclei with formation of three and four particles in the final state are calculated. Three-body interaction of clusters which form the target nucleus ground state in ⁶Li $(n, n^{'}) d α$ and ⁷Li $(n, n^{'} α) t$ reactions is shown to be of great importance.
Enhanced collectivity in 12Be

Electromagnetic quadrupole transition strength is a sensitive probe of the evolution of the structure of nuclei, particularly the competition between collectivity and magicity. We have performed a new lifetime measurement of the $2_{1}^{+}$ state of ¹²Be to study the interplay of these phenomena. The lifetime was measured with the Doppler Shift Attenuation Method using the γ-ray detector GRETINA. Excited states of ¹²Be were produced via inelastic scattering at 55 MeV/nucleon, using several different targets to control for systematic uncertainties in the stopping powers. The lifetime is determined to be $τ = 1.38 \pm 0.10 (stat) \pm 0.19 (sys)$ ps, which is about half the previously reported value at twice the precision. The reduced transition strength deduced from this result is $B (E 2; 2_{1}^{+} \to 0_{1}^{+}) = 14.2 \pm 1.0 (stat) \pm 2.0 (sys) e^{2} {fm}^{4}$ , which supports the quenching of the $N = 8$ shell gap in ¹²Be.
Aboveground test of an advanced Li<inf>2</inf>MoO<inf>4</inf> scintillating bolometer to search for neutrinoless double beta decay of 100Mo

Large lithium molybdate (Li₂MoO₄) crystal boules were produced by using the low thermal gradient Czochralski growth technique from deeply purified molybdenum. A small sample from one of the boules was preliminary characterized in terms of X-ray-induced and thermally-excited luminescence. A large cylindrical crystalline element (with a size of ⊘40 × 40 mm) was used to fabricate a scintillating bolometer, which was operated aboveground at ∼15 mK by using a pulse-tube cryostat housing a high-power dilution refrigerator. The excellent detector performance in terms of energy resolution and α background suppression along with preliminary positive indications on the radiopurity of this material show the potentiality of Li₂MoO₄ scintillating bolometers for low-counting experiment to search for neutrinoless double beta decay of ¹⁰⁰Mo.
Disintegration of 12C nuclei by 700-1500 MeV photons

Disintegration of ¹²C nuclei by tagged photons of 700–1500 MeV energy at the GRAAL facility has been studied by means of the LAGRANγE detector with a wide angular acceptance. The energy and momentum distributions of produced neutrons and protons as well as their multiplicity distributions were measured and compared with corresponding distributions calculated with the RELDIS model based on the intranuclear cascade and Fermi break-up models. It was found that eight fragments are created on average once per about 100 disintegration events, while a complete fragmentation of ¹²C into 12 nucleons is observed typically only once per 2000 events. Measured multiplicity distributions of produced fragments are well described by the model. The measured total photoabsorption cross section on ¹²C in the same energy range is also reported.
