Abstract

Prominent gross and intermediate width structures are observed in the C12+C12, C12+C12*(2+), C12*(2+)+C12*(2+), Be8+O16, and Be8+O16* (3,0+) decay channels following Mg24* population via the C12(O16, α)Mg24 reaction at Ec.m.=33 MeV. Evidence that the C12(O16, α)Mg24 reaction populates states in Mg24 which are associated with C12+C12 resonances is presented in the form of correlation analyses between the α+C12+C12 three-body spectra and previously measured C12+C12 elastic and inelastic excitation functions. Direct determination of C12+C12 widths from these measurements is obscured by a background of other strong transitions which appear to be present in the C12(O16, α)Mg24 singles spectrum.

NUCLEAR REACTIONS C12(O16, α)Mg*24X+Y; measured σ(αXY) three body coincidence, fission widths of states in Mg24 between Ex=20 and 40 MeV. Intermediate structure observed.
