Pionic fission cross sections on lithium

Abstract

New 6,7Li(π+, 3He) 3,4 He differential cross sections are combined with earlier data to study the reaction's energy dependence between threshold and Tπ = 60 MeV. The cross sections for the 7Li(π+, 3He'3He)n and 7Li(π+, 3He3He)p reactions, in which the nucleon is nearly at rest, are also measured and found to have magnitudes similar to the 6Li(π+,3He)3He cross section. The 3He3H + p channel has a factor of 4(±2) higher yield than the 3He3He + n channel. The results are examined in terms of two different models for the reaction mechanism.
