Abstract

Excitation functions for the yields of eleven residual nuclei from the N14+ N14 reaction have been measured over the range Ec.m.=725 MeV in steps of ∼ 250 keV with γ-ray techniques. The magnitude and energy dependence of the excitation functions for the partial yields are very different from those for the C12+ O16 system. The total fusion cross section is similar to that from C12+ O16 when compared at the same center of mass energy, but appears to saturate at an energy and magnitude which are lower than expected from previous systematics. Small, regular fluctuations can be seen in the fusion cross section at the 1-2% level.

NUCLEAR REACTIONS N14(N14, x); Ec.m.=725 MeV; measured excitation functions for production of A=1627 reaction products, observed small structures at Ec.m.=15.0, 17.1, 18.5, 20.4, and 22.0 MeV; deduced critical angular momentum for fusion.
