Abstract

We derive a model-independent relation between the nuclear charge radius $R_{c}$ , the bremsstrahlung-weighted photoabsorption sum rule σ₋₁ and the mean proton distance. Such a relation allows the mean proton distance to be determined from available experimental data. We also discuss the Foldy sum rule in the light of our result.

Benchmark calculation of inclusive electromagnetic responses in the four-body nuclear system

Both the no-core shell model and the effective interaction hyperspherical harmonic approaches are applied to the calculation of different response functions to external electromagnetic probes, using the Lorentz integral transform method. The test is performed on the four-body nuclear system, within a simple potential model. The quality of the agreement in the various cases is discussed, together with the perspectives for rigorous ab initio calculations of cross sections of heavier nuclei.
Sum rules and giant resonances in nuclei

The formalism of sum rules is developed and employed to investigate various giant resonances in nuclei. Particular emphasis is given to the role of surface effects which are shown to play a crucial role in the propagation of isoscalar as well as isovector collective modes. Sum rules for non-Hermitian operators, in particular for charge exchange reactions, are derived using the formalism of the dynamic polarizability. Several sum rules for investigating magnetic excitations, the structure of the transition density and the role of the nuclear deformation and of temperature on giant resonance are also presented and discussed.
