Abstract

The contribution of the heavy particle stripping mechanism to the elastic scattering of He3 on He4 is calculated using a modified distorted-wave Born approximation approach. The resulting amplitude is combined with a conventional optical potential amplitude and the calculated cross sections are compared with measurements at Ec.m.=60 and 113 MeV. It is found that the heavy particle stripping mechanism produces most of the observed cross sections backward of θc.m.=100° and that it has very little effect on forward cross sections.
