We construct a complex energy functional to be used in the calculation of the nucleus-nucleus optical potential. The functional is related to a Skyrme-like nucleon-nucleon interaction derived from a finite range complex interaction previously obtained from nuclear matter calculations appropriate to heavy ion collisions. Calculations for ${}_{}{}^{16}{}_{}{}^{}\mathrm{O}$ + ${}_{}{}^{16}{}_{}{}^{}\mathrm{O}$ reproduce very well the results obtained from the finite range interaction.
