Abstract

Decay of Np241 (T12=13.9±0.2 min) was studied by γ-ray spectroscopy. The Np sources, prepared by the U238 (α,p) and Pu244(n,p3n) reactions, were chemically separated and purified. Eleven γ rays, mostly new, were observed between 42.0 and 929.7 keV, and their intensities per disintegration were determined. A decay scheme for Np241 is proposed which helps to elucidate the level structure of Pu241. Comparison with nuclear reaction data is used to identify a 52 octupole vibrational state and to characterize some of the other levels.

RADIOACTIVITY 13.9-min Np241 from U238(α,p) and Pu244(n,p3n); radiochemistry, Ge(Li) and 4πβ detectors. Measured T12, Eγ, Iγ; radiochemistry, Ge(Li) and 4πβ detectors. Measured T12, Eγ, Iγ; deduced Iβ, logft, Iπ, decay scheme.
