Abstract

A pion double-charge-exchange reaction is studied by using a closure approximation to sum the intermediate nuclear states. The calculated first minimum of the differential cross section of 18O+, π)18Ne is at 30°, which is much smaller than the value of the optical-model calculation. However, the closure-approximation model cannot describe the data even when the polarization of the 16O core is treated properly.
