Abstract

It is shown that good estimates of the strong absorption rates of positive pions by a heavy nucleus below the Coulomb barrier can be made using distorted wavefunctions calculated analytically for a point Coulomb potential. The complete results depend almost linearly upon the local absorptive potential but rather weakly upon the rest of the optical potential assumed.
