Abstract

A semiclassical calculation is made of the total reaction cross sections for composite projectiles (d and α) on C12, O16, and Ca40 target nuclei at medium energy (250Ec.m.A300 MeV/nucleon). The internal motion of the nucleons in the projectile is taken into account adiabatically. An effective nuclear radius is obtained which is much smaller than the sum of the sharp-cutoff radii of target and projectile. Contrary to the suggestion of DeVries and Peng, nuclei are found to be less transparent to composite projectiles than to protons.
