Abstract

The (p, pα) and (p, dHe3) reactions on Be9 have been investigated at a bombarding energy of 101.5 MeV in a non-coplanar geometry. Coincident data were obtained for coplanar angles θp,d=81.2° and θα,He3=41.0°, and the α(He3) detector ranging from β=0° to 20° out of the plane. These data show a smooth reduction in cross section with increasing β. Comparisons with distorted-wave impulse approximation calculations show that the reactions are dominated by quasifree processes, and that the D-state component of the Be9 wave function dominates for large β. Absolute spectroscopic factors for the S- and D-state terms extracted from the two different reactions are consistent and in excellent agreement with theoretical predictions.

NUCLEAR REACTIONS Be9(p, pα) and Be9(p, dHe3), Elab=101.5 MeV; measured d3σdΩ1dΩ2dE1 (E1, E2, θ1, θ2, β2); Non-coplanar geometry; DWIA analysis; deduced alpha particle spectroscopic factors.
