Abstract

The line shape of the Jπ = 32+, Ex = 7.677 MeV resonance in 13C excited by inelastic scattering of α-particles is measured. It shows an asymmetric line shape with a dip on the high-energy side of the resonance. This is in contrast to the line shape of that resonance as seen in the 12C(n, n)12C elastic scattering and the corresponding 12C(d, p)13C reaction, where the dip is on the low-energy side. The asymmetric line shape in the inelastic α-scattering which can be parametrized by a (complex) parameter q is explained theoretically as the interference of a continuum transition and the excitation of a quasibound configuration, in close analogy to the analysis by Fano of asymmetric line shapes in inelastic electron-atom scattering. The line shape parameter q is sensitive to nuclear models and thus is a new tool in the study of nuclear wave functions.
