Abstract

The O16, Mg24,26, Si28, S32, Ca40(α,C12) reactions have been studied at Eα=90.3 MeV. The observed cross sections fall off rapidly with increasing target mass At5±1, consistent with predictions for direct Be8 or successive α transfer employing first-order SU3 cluster overlap amplitudes, although other, more complicated mecanisms cannot be excluded. The results are extrapolated and estimates of multi-α-cluster transfer cross sections in heavy nuclei, such as those proposed to synthesize superheavy elements, are obtained.

NUCLEAR REACTIONS O16, Mg24,26, Si28, Ca40(α,C12); measured σ(EC12,15°); inferred target-mass dependence; extrapolated multi-α-cluster transfer cross sections for heavy nuclei relevant for synthesis of superheavy elements.
