Abstract

We demonstrate that polarized-proton radiative capture may be used to unambiguously identify concentrations of magnetic dipole strength. Three M1 resonances are observed in the doubly magic O16 nucleus between Ex=16 and 20 MeV, with a relatively large total γ0-transition strength B(M1)>~0.24μ02.
