Abstract

Evidence is presented for the excitation of giant multipole resonances in inelastic scattering of 315-MeV O16 ions on C12, Ni58, and Pb208 targets. Highly excited modes around 20 MeV of excitation energy in Pb208 exhaust a large fraction of the energy-weighted isoscalar E3 and E5 sum-rule strengths.
