Abstract

Deuteron inelastic scattering experiments on 14N are made at Ed = 10.03, 11.65, 14.82 and 17.88 MeV, with emphasis on the isospin-forbidden excitation of the 2.31 MeV (0+, T = 1) state. In order to clarify the reaction mechanism, we have performed analyses assuming both a direct reaction mechanism and compound nucleus formation. Direct reaction calculations using second-order DWBA reproduce fairly well the strong energy dependence of the angular distributions and of the integrated cross sections. Hauser-Feshbach (HF) calculations reproduce the pattern of the angular distributions in the lower energy region. For the isospin-allowed transitions the simple DWBA calculation gives reasonable agreement with the experiment. The present calculation shows that the observed isospin violation is well accounted for by a direct multi-step reaction mechanism assuming isospin mixing in the intermediate channels.
