Abstract

A He2 detection system has been developed and used to investigate the (α, He2) reaction at bombarding energies of 55 and 65 MeV on targets of C12, C13, N14, N15, O16, O18, Ne20, Ne22, Mg24, Mg26, Si28, Si29, S32, Ar36, Ar38, and Ca40. Preferential population of two-neutron states with dominant (d52)24, (d32f72)5, and (f72)26 character was observed. A linear A dependence of the binding energies of the Jπ=5 and 6+ states was obtained. This systematic behavior is well described by the Bansal-French model, using the parameters a=0.30 MeV and b=2.6 MeV. Simple shell-model calculations for the 2n configurations are in good agreement with the experimental data.

NUCLEAR REACTIONS C12, C13, N14, N15, O16, O18, Ne20, Ne22, Mg26, Si28, Si29, S32, Ar36, Ar38(α, He2), E=65 MeV and Mg24, Ca40(α, He2), E=55 MeV. Measured σ(Ef, θ), deduced Ex and Jπ systematics.
