Direct Measurement of the Spin-Dependent Capture and Scattering of Slow Neutrons by Li6

Abstract

The spin-dependent capture cross section σ+cσc of slow neutrons (λ=1.074 Å) by Li6 has been determined from the flipping ratio of a transmitted polarized neutron beam as a function of Li6 polarization. We used two methods, one of which also enabled us to measure the spin-dependent scattering length b+b of Li6. We find σ+cσc=1170±50 b and b+b=(0.38±0.05)×1012 cm.
