Abstract

The multi-channel 12C+16O scattering is studied with the generator coordinate method. The elastic and 12C(2+)+16O inelastic channels are included. The results of the microscopic calculation disagree with experiment because the inelastic threshold energy is underestimated and the coupling between the channels is too strong. Empirical corrections to the microscopic matrix elements are therefore introduced. The results obtained using these corrections confirm the spin assignments predicted by the single-channel calculation. They also explain which resonances are observed in the inelastic channel. The existence of a window of low absorption for J-values comprised between 10 and 14 is suggested. The general problem of the occurrence of molecular resonances in light heavy-ion collisions is discussed.
