Abstract
The alpha -spectroscopic amplitudes of 16O are analysed in detail using the recent calculation of Apagyi and Fai (1976) based on the shell-model results of Zuker et al (1968). The importance of the knowledge of the precise magnitude and phase of the amplitudes is emphasised. The dependence on the nuclear size is exhibited and the contributions arising from the nuclear structure and from the overlap between the alpha -particle wavefunction and the shell-model basis states are separated and made transparent by gathering the information together into figures.
