Abstract

Experiments on $(ft)^{+} /(ft)^{−}$ for mirror Gamow-Teller β-decay are reanalyzed in the light of recent work and new values for the Kubodera, Delorme and Rho second class parameters are deduced: ξ = − (0.8 ± 2.0) × 10⁻³MeV⁻¹; λ = (3.4 ± 3.9) × 10⁻³. These values are compared with recent correlation experiments.

Second class currents and neutrino mass in mirror transitions

The influence of the second class currents (SCC) on angular correlations, charge asymmetries and electron polarizations in beta decays of mirror nuclei are investigated in the Kubodera-Delorme-Rho (KDR) model. It is shown that these quantities depend in very different ways on the KDR-model parameters ζ and λ, which can be used for their experimental determination. In the middle of the β-spectrum the SCC effects dominate over those due to the neutrino rest mass, but the SCC can not modify the specific tail of the correlation coefficient A_ev in the case of a non-zero neutrino mass. More rigorously, we can state that in the case of m_v ≠ 0, and independently of the presence of SCC, the correlation coefficient A_ev tends to zero (A_ev^GT→0) at the upper end of the β-spectrum. This is contrary to the standard result (which assumes m_v = 0), according to which this coefficient tends to a non-zero constant $(A_{ev}^{GT} = − 13 β_{e} →− 13)$ .

The general formalism for allowed β-transitions is derived in the framework of the elementary particle as well as in the impulse approximation treatment. Explicit expressions for the shape factor, the asymmetry and anisotropy of electrons emitted from oriented nuclei, the β-γ (CP) correlation and the β-γ angular correlation are given. Emphasis is imputed to the question how model independently these quantities can be evaluated. This problem has been studied in detail for the β-transitions in the nuclei ¹²B¹²N, ²⁰F²⁰Na, ²²Na and ²⁴Na²⁴Al. The computations of the nuclear matrix elements are carried out for the A = 12 system in intermediate coupling and for the sd-shell nuclei in the SU(6)-SU(3) coupling scheme using different residual interactions. Comparison to experiments is made. All results can be explained with ordinary CVC predictions without invoking second class currents.
