Abstract

The absorptive part of the heavy ion optical potential is derived in the framework of the momentum space folding model. The occurence of gross structure in the high energy region of the 12C-12C and 16O-16O excitation functions and the absence of the structure in the low energy region of the 40Ca-40Ca excitation functions can be adequately explained in the diffraction model.
