Abstract

A method is proposed to eliminate the centre-of-mass spuriosity in continuum shell-model calculations. It is applied to study the character of the J^π = 1⁻ resonances predicted by the recent coupled-channels calculations in ⁴He. The non-spurious nature of the 1⁻, T = 0 resonance at 23 MeV is established. In addition, the present calculations lead to improved agreement with the experimental data in the particle channels at higher excitation energies in ⁴He.
