Abstract

A generalization of Fano's method to parametrize the cross section for inelastic scattering of electrons on atoms exciting autoionized states is deduced for inelastic scattering of nucleons on nuclei leading to resonant states. It is shown that the line shape parameter becomes complex when distortion for the projectile wave function is included. Model calculations are performed for the reactions 25Mg(p, p')25Mg(Ex = 8.838 MeV, Jπ = 12+) and 16N(p, p')16N (Ex = 5.729 MeV, Jπ = 1+) assuming the direct reaction mechanism.
