Elastic scattering of high-energy protons from nuclei

Abstract

The elastic scattering of high-energy protons from zero-spin nuclei is considered within the framework of Glauber theory. The sensitivity of the cross sections to the nuclear structure and to the proton-nucleon amplitude is studied. Results of calculations demonstrating the investigated effects are presented for the case of 1 GeV proton scattering from ⁴He, ¹⁶O and ⁵⁸Ni.

Microscopic study of deuteron-nucleus total reaction cross section at medium energies

Total reaction cross sections for 38, 67 and 97 MeV deuteron for several nuclei have been analyzed within the theoretical framework of the Glauber model. The Glauber elastic S-matrix element to the deuteron–nucleus system is evaluated in the rigid projectile model which takes as the input N–d elastic scattering amplitude evaluated in terms of the nucleon–nucleon amplitude and ground state density of the deuteron. The analysis takes into consideration the Coulomb modification of the projectile trajectory, downward energy shift of the projectile nucleon due to the Coulomb field and the modification on nucleon–nucleon total cross section. The contribution to the total reaction cross section from the photo-disintegration of the deuteron is also considered. Using the semi-phenomenological proton and neutron densities for the target, we find that in general, the theoretical predictions are in fairly good agreement with the experimental data.
Nuclear matter distributions in the 6He and 8He nuclei from differential cross sections for small-angle proton elastic scattering at intermediate energy

A Glauber based analysis of the experimental cross sections for small-angle elastic $p$ ^6,8He scattering at 0.7 GeV has been performed. The radii and radial shape of the ⁶He and ⁸He nuclei have been determined using phenomenological nuclear density distributions with two free parameters. The deduced shapes of the ⁶He and ⁸He nuclear matter radial distributions conform with the concept that both nuclei consist of an $α$ -particle core and a significant neutron halo. The accuracy of the theoretical analysis of the elastic-scattering cross-section data is discussed, and possible sources of systematic uncertainty related to some basic limitations in the applied method are outlined. The experimental $p$ ^6,8He elastic-scattering cross sections have also been utilized for probing the matter density distributions resulting from various nuclear microscopic models. Besides, the sensitivity of the total $p$ ^6,8He reaction cross sections to the size of the ⁶He and ⁸He nuclei has been considered.
Correlation effects in the final-state interaction for quasielastic (e, e' p) scattering

Color transparency predicts that, in (e, e'p) reactions at large Q², the final-state interaction becomes weaker than the reference value predicted from the free-nucleon cross section. This reference value is usually evaluated in the dilute-gas approximation to Glauber's multiple-scattering theory. We derive the leading-order correction taking into account two-body correlations. Large cancellations are found so that the overall correlation effect is small.
Nonrelativistic and relativistic descriptions of proton-nucleus scattering

Historically, work in medium energy nucleon-nucleus scattering physics started in the 1950s and has continued since. During the past ten years exciting new developments have occurred, and this work reviews these developments. Two distinct theoretical approaches for describing the medium energy scattering process are discussed. The first is nonrelativistic and is based on approximate solutions to the many-body Schrödinger equation. The second is relativistic and is based on covariant meson exchange theory and the Dirac equation.
A pedagogical discussion of nonrelativistic multiple scattering formalisms is presented, followed by a description of the approximation schemes used in numerical applications of the theory. Recent theoretical developments in the nonrelativistic approach, including medium corrections to the effective projectile-target nucleon interaction, off-shell contributions, and full integration (“full-folding”) of the nucleon-nucleus optical potential are discussed in detail.
The historical development of the relativistic scattering models for the nucleon-nucleus system is reviewed and each of the principal models developed during the past ten years is explained, starting with the original relativistic impulse approximation model.
We show direct comparisons, some previously unpublished, between the predictions of the best available nonrelativistic and relativistic scattering models and the data. A number of specific proton-nucleus elastic scattering cases are considered, including p+¹⁶O, ⁴⁰Ca and ²⁰⁸Pb at incident proton laboratory energies of 200, 500 and 800 MeV. Both relativistic and nonrelativistic approaches provide surprisingly similar and fairly good overall descriptions of the data. Finally, possible areas of further theoretical work in this field are discussed.

Deformation correlation effects in the 154Sm-144Sm neutron density difference

The second order Kerman, McManus and Thaler optical potential model is used in the analysis of 800 MeV proton elastic scattering data from ^144,154Sm. Correlation terms arising from the large intrinsic deformation of ¹⁵⁴Sm are included and are found to be quite significant. Neutron isotopic density distribution and rms radius differences are determined and are seen to be in good agreement with deformed basis, Hartree-Fock predictions.
