Excitation of the giant dipole resonance in C12(π,π)C*12

Abstract

We apply Glauber theory to calculate the cross section for the excitation of the giant dipole resonance (1) in C12 by pions. In the resonance region the cross section σGDR=1.7 mb. It is too small to influence the ratio of the (π,πN) reaction. This result contradicts previous speculations.

NUCLEAR REACTIONS C12(π,π)C*12, E=180 MeV, calculated σ(E) for giant dipole, discussed relevance for (π,πN) reaction.
