Abstract

Isoscalar giant quadrupole resonances are theoretically studied for O16 and Ca40. A remarkable difference in the widths of these resonances observed in (α, α) experiments is explained. Both one-particle, one-hole and two-particle, two-hole correlations are found to be responsible for producing the difference.
