Abstract

A simple application of second-order perturbation theory is shown to provide an accurate method to evaluate nuclear polarization effects in light muonic atoms. The technique, in conjunction with oscillator nuclear wave functions, is used to evaluate the effect on the splitting of the 2P32-2S12 states of muonic 3He and 4He. Comparisons with recent experimental measurements in 4He and with other calculations are presented. We find a small discrepancy which could be accounted for by a slightly larger nuclear radius than the presently accepted value.
