Abstract

Extensive differential cross section measurements are reported for the isospin-forbidden reaction N14(α,α1)N14 over the energy range 7.6<Eα<16.9 MeV at 11 to 16 angles. A partial wave analysis with a new method of removing ambiguities and parametrizing S matrix elements yields the level parameters of 151 isospin-mixed, natural-parity states in F18. These level parameters satisfactorily reproduce all the data. Many of these F18 states correspond to those seen via O16(d,α1)N14. A number of levels have been identified as the analogs of T=1 states in O18. Correlations in Sl(Ex) suggest intermediate structure and support Friedman's bridge state hypothesis.

NUCLEAR REACTIONS N14(α,α1), E=7.616.9 MeV; measured σ(E,θ):θ=20165°, ΔE=2030 keV. Deduced F18 level parameters, S matrix analysis, new method excluding ambiguous solutions. Isospin mixing, deduced IAS.
