Abstract

To establish the dependence of the reaction 6Li(γ, π+)6He near threshold on the choice of nuclear model we examine in detail both the impulse approximation and elementary particle treatments of this process. In the impulse approximation for the nuclear transition occuring here four sets of nuclear wave functions are studied, while for the elementary particle description the method of Kim and Primakoff is followed. The precise relationship between these two treatments is explicitly established. In both approaches the nuclear form factors are constrained by comparing with the electromagnetic properties of 6Li, particularly with electron scattering data. The various nuclear models are also applied to weak interaction processes (most importantly, to μ-capture) to determine whether they provide a valid description of the 6Li6He transition for the region of momentum transfer occurring in the photopion reaction.
