Isoscalar Giant Resonance in Light Nuclei (A<~40)

Abstract

The giant-resonance region was studied for Ca40, Ar40, Ar36, S32, Si28, Al27, Ne20, and O16 by inelastic scattering of 96.6-MeV α particles. A systematic broadening of the isoscalar giant resonance at Eexc63A13 MeV occurs as A decreases. The width for Ca40 is 3.5±0.3 MeV, for S32 it is 7.1±0.5 MeV, and for nuclei below A=32 the resonance is too diffuse to be observed.
