Abstract

Coincidence measurements of charged particles emitted in a narrow cone in Li+7Au197, near grazing incidence, show that the two-step breakup via the 72 (4.63 MeV) state in the α+t channel is very weak, in agreement with the predictions of the corresponding inelastic process (σtot=350 μb). An important αd coincidence yield comes from the following mechanism: Au197(Li7, Li*6 (2.18 MeV)) Au198, Li*6(2.18 MeV)α+d; σtot<~9±2 mb. The experimental optimum Q value of the first step of this process is Qopt=1.8±0.1 MeV.
