Abstract

Formulae are given for calculating the I · L (target spin) potential arising from single nucleon exchange effects and the nucleon-projectile two-body spin-orbit force. An estimate of the strength of this potential is made for the scattering of 4He from 9Be and 59Co. While the effects arising from single nucleon exchange are found to be much more important than those arising from the two-body spin-orbit force, neither mechanism is sufficiently important to explain the experimental data.
