Abstract

We have determined the effect of using self-consistent radial wave functions to calculate the monopole core polarization in the (1s0d) shell. This was found to stabilize the isoscalar monopole phonon in the random-phase approximation and to increase the relative weight of the nuclear surface region in the matrix elements coupling the monopole phonons to the valence particles. In order to account for the isotope shift and Nolen-Schiffer anomaly it is however necessary to use an effective interaction with the proper dependence at the nuclear surface.
