Study of enhanced backward α-scattering on nuclei with A = 12–18

Abstract

Angular distributions of the elastic α-scattering on 12C, 14C, 15N, 16O and 18O at energies between 22 and 29 MeV and excitation functions on 14C have been measured. The cross sections at large angles for all isotopes except 18O are enhanced by two orders of magnitude over the pure Coulomb scattering. These phenomena are interpreted as due to sequences of resonances with parameters depending smoothly on the l-value. The Regge formalism describing such resonances was applied. By adding one Regge pole to the scattering matrix of the optical model a much improved description of the data could be obtained. The extracted resonance parameters suggest that they are intermediate-structure resonances. The strength of the backward enhancement may be correlated with the total width which reflects coupling to the states of the compound-nucleus system. The relation of our interpretation to other resonance descriptions is discussed.
