Abstract

The difference between the observed fluctuations in the elastic excitation functions for carbon-carbon and oxygen-oxygen scattering, just above the Coulomb barrier, is interpreted in terms of the compound nucleus model.

Dynamical aspects of large angle heavy-ion scattering

The recent data on large-angle scattering of heavy ions are reviewed. Typical features of these data are anomalously large cross sections in the backward hemisphere, strongly oscillatory angular distributions, and highly regular gross structures modulated by much narrower structures in excitation functions. A critical evaluation is presented of the different models proposed to understand various aspects of the data. Independent of these models, all the data show that the nuclear surface is more transparent than previously thought. The presence in the excitation functions of both narrow and broad structures indicates that there is an interplay of various reaction times, ranging from the lifetime of the compound nucleus to the time associated with shape resonances in the ion-ion potentials. Partly because of this apparently very complex reaction mechanism, there is at present no quantitative all-encompassing understanding of the physical origin of the observed phenomena. Promising avenues for future theoretical and experimental investigations are pointed out.
Statistical intermediate structures in compound nucleus reactions

A study of the ¹²C + ¹²C and ¹⁶O + ¹⁶O elastic scattering reactions is made in terms of a general stochastic theory of nuclear excitation functions. It is shown that a general understanding of the cross section and a quantitive description of the position and widths of the structures observed is achieved in these terms. Calculations of average elastic widths for the relevant angular momenta are presented and compared with data.
A self-consistent microscopic approach to the 12C+12C reaction at low energy

A completely microscopic approach based on the full Hartree-Fock-Bogolyubov procedure and 'the gaussian overlap approximation of the generator coordinate method is applied to the ¹²C+¹²C reaction at low energy. No accurate reproduction of the experimental results is looked for. The aim of this work is rather to obtain the general behaviour of the quantities of interest by using an approach as free as possible from phenomenological hypotheses.
Molecular configurations in heavy-ion collisions

High spin properties of ²⁴Mg, ³²S and ³⁶S have been studied by means of the Strutinsky method. A separation degree of freedom is explicitly included by using a two-center model for the shellmodel part of the calculations. It is found that for the first two systems special configurations exist that are in their structure directly related to molecular ¹²C + ¹²C and ¹⁶O + ¹⁶O configurations and merge continuously into these with increasing separation. On the basis of these results the general problem of molecular states is discussed.
Compound transfer and direct transfer reactions induced by 17O on 13C

The elastic scattering, inelastic scattering, single-neutron transfer reactions ¹³C(¹⁷O, ¹⁶O) ¹⁴C, ¹³C(¹⁷O, ¹⁸O)¹²C and ¹³C(¹⁷O, ¹⁸O_{2+, 1.98})¹²C, and seven other exit channels which involve ⁷Li, ⁹Be, ¹¹B and ¹⁵N have been measured for the system ¹⁷O+¹³C at 12.9 and 14 MeV c.m. It is shown that all reactions mentioned above have significant contributions from compound nuclear decay, following fusion of projectile and target.
Elastic transfer processes in heavy ion scattering

A survey of the scattering of nuclei on nuclei of adjacent masses in which elastic transfer can occur is given. Scattering systems with mass differences ranging from 1 nucleon up to 5 nucleons are discussed. The interpretation of the available data in terms of the (i) optical model, (ii) the coherent addition of elastic scattering and transfer using the DWBA and (iii) in terms of the molecular two state approximation and coupled channels is discussed. Examples of calculations are given and the extraction of spectroscopic information is illustrated. The occurrence of multiple exchange of nucleons — higher order effects compared to DWBA — is discussed. It is shown that these effects are possible for weakly absorbing scattering systems. Future applications and extensions to larger masses are outlined.
