Abstract

Compound states of high excitation in O17 and Ne21,22 have been observed, with good resolution, in the total neutron yield from the reactions C13(α, n)O16 and O17,18(α, n)Ne20,21. Bombarding α-particle energies were approximately from 1 to 5 MeV. Analysis of the area under the excitation curves gives α-particle strength functions of Sα=0.029±0.030 for C13+α, 0.030±0.023 for C13+α, and 0.022±0.010 for O18+α. For astrophysical purposes these strength functions are used to extrapolate the average cross sections to lower energies.
