A study of the 9Be(p, pα)5He reaction at 26.0, 35.0 and 46.8 MeV

Abstract

The cross sections for the reaction ⁹Be(p, pα)⁵⁵He were measured at 26.0, 35.0 and 46.8 MeV incident energies. The resulting data were analyzed in the plane-wave impulse approximation and compared to the results of existing data taken at 55.0, 57.0, 155.0 and 160 MeV. These data appear to be consistent with an S-state of relative motion of the α-cluster.

The quasi-free 9Be(3He, αα)4He reaction between 3 and 12 MeV

The $^{9} Be (^{3} He, αα)^{4} He$ reaction was studied in a kinematically complete experiment in the energy range E = 3–12 MeV in order to extract information about the energy dependence of the quasi-free process proceeding through the virtual $^{5} He (^{3} He, α)^{4} He$ reaction. The excitation function of this process was extracted from the data and the momentum distribution of the ⁴He-⁵He motion in ⁹Be was deduced. The behaviour of the excitation function around and above the Coulomb barrier is discussed.
Quasifree 5He + 3He → α + α reaction process in the 9Be(3He, αα)4He reaction at E(3He) = 4.0 MeV

The quasifree $^{5} He +^{3} He → α + α$ reaction process has been observed in the ⁹Be(³He, αα) ⁴He reaction at $E(^{3} He) = 4.0 MeV$ . The momentum distribution between the ⁵He and α-particle clusters in ⁹Be has been extracted. The result shows that the ⁵He-α system in ⁹Be is mainly in an S-state which is the same conclusion as obtained from the (p, pα) and (α, 2α) reactions. The deduced momentum distribution is somewhat narrower compared with the (p, pα) results. The angular distribution of the quasi $^{5} He +^{3} He → α + α$ reaction was also deduced.
(n, t) and (n, α) reactions on 9Be

A metallic ⁹Be target was bombarded with 13.99 MeV neutrons; α-particles, tritons and ⁶He recoil nuclei were detected and identified with a telescope consisting of two proportional counters and a solid state detector. Absolute differential cross sections were measured for the (n, t) reactions leading to the ground state and first excited state of ⁷Li and for the (n, α) reactions leading to the ground state and first excited state of ⁶He. No evidence for higher excited states in ⁶He has been found. An attempt has been made to interpret the observed (n, α) angular distributions in terms of the direct reaction model.
alpha-cluster wave functions for 9be from the 9Be(p, pα)5He reaction between 35 and 160 MeV

We have used harmonic-oscillator, Hulthén, square-well and Woods-Saxon wave functions in an attempt to describe the ⁹Be(p, pα)⁵He reaction in the context of the plane-wave impulse approximation (PWIA) with radial cut-off. We have obtained reasonable fits to all the data between 35 and 160 MeV by using the Woods-Saxon wave functions, and increasing the cut-off radius for decreasing energy. A consistent value for the effective number of α-clusters in ⁹Be was obtained and found to be 0.2.
