Abstract

Excitation functions for the population of shape isomers in americium nuclei have been studied by triton and proton bombardment of Pu239, Pu240, Pu242, and Pu244 with triton energies ranging from 10 to 16 MeV and proton energies from 9 to 16 MeV. The reactions studied are (t, 2n), (t, 3n), and (p, 2n) leading to final nuclei Am241,243,245, Am240,242,244, and Am238,239,241,243, respectively. In two cases half-lives were obtained, namely, Pu240(p, 2n)Am239m, T12=163±12 nsec and Pu244(t, 2n)Am245m, T12=390±70 nsec.
