Abstract

A surface-peaked term has been added to the real-central potential of the optical model resulting in significantly improved fits to proton elastic scattering data from 40Ca and 16O. The real-central potentials are used to determine empirically the mean-square radius of the effective nucleon-nucleon interaction to be 4.64±0.36 fm.
