Abstract

The quasi-elastic knock-out mechanism of the (α, 2α) reaction is studied in the pole approximation. In this approximation the reaction amplitude contains only the on-mass-shell amplitudes describing the virtual emission of the α-cluster by a target nucleus and the α-α elastic scattering. The calculated angular correlation functions and energy spectra are compared with the experimental ones for the (α, 2α) reactions on 1p shell nuclei at different incident energies. The main attention is focussed on the problem of choosing the relative energy, Ec, of two colliding α-particles in the α-α scattering cross section. It follows from our calculations that the polemodel fits the data only qualitatively and that there is no single universal Ec prescription suited for all bombarding energies and for all targets.
