Abstract

Differential cross-section angular distributions and excitation functions have been measured for the 12C(α,α)12C reaction between 10.0 and 10.3 MeV α-particle energies. A strong anomaly is observed near Eα = 10.2 MeV at all angles except where P6(cos θ) = 0. A phase-shift analysis of the angular distributions indicates a 6+ resonance. The results of an R-matrix analysis using a single-level formalism yields Jπ = 6+, Eres = 10.199 MeV, Γlab = = 70 ± 10 keV, and ΓαΓ=0.50 ± 0.03. Possible configurations for this state are discussed.
